Vasectomy and the National Health Service
The Elliot-Smith Clinic is a not for profit organisation. The charges made cover any counselling that may be necessary, the operation and all post-operative
semen tests. The operation is free in some areas, however, and if you wish to find out about the facilities in your area you should consult your family doctor or
your local Family Planning Clinic. The Elliot-Smith Clinic does act as an agent, providing free operations for those men whose applications are approved
and accepted for payment by the NHS. Further information about contraceptive choices and sterilization for men and women is obtainable from the
Family Planning Association.
Procedure for obtaining the operation
You should go, with your partner, to your doctor who should discuss your request and examine you, and he/she should give you one of our consent forms
to complete and sign (one can be printed by clicking here). If either your GP or you wish a further interview with one of our surgeons, this can be arranged. Your fee is required with
your consent form before the operation appointment is given.
An appointment for operation will be sent (usually 3-8 weeks ahead).
NHS appointments are dependent upon the NHS waiting list.
Occasionally an appointment for examination or counselling will be required. No extra charge will be made if you proceed to operation.
However, if for whatever reason, you do not proceed to operation, a consultation fee will be required.
It is this Clinic’s policy that:
-
If your partner is pregnant, or has recently had a baby, Vasectomy should normally be deferred until the child is six months old.
-
If either partner is under the age of twenty-five we also recommend that the operation should be deferred.
Instructions for preparation for the operation and after-care are sent with the appointment. Operations are performed Tuesday and Friday afternoons
and some Saturday mornings.
