Vasectomy (Male sterilization)
Vasectomy is a minor operation, usually done under a local anaesthetic. As many thousands of men from this Clinic and elsewhere can confirm,
it does not affect the man's sex life - lovemaking may, in fact, become more spontaneous. Vasectomy should be viewed as irreversible:
reversal surgery is possible but it may not be successful. The pros and cons need
to be discussed carefully by the couple and with their doctor.
The decision for any type of sterilization is so final, a couple should both be really sure they do not want to try instead one of the fully reversible
alternatives for women with similar reliability that are now available. The Family Planning Association (FPA) helpline 0845 310 1334
will supply further details and leaflets.
The Operation
The testicles, (male reproductive organs), lie outside the body in a pouch of skin known as the scrotum.
The sperm are passed from the testicles through a thin tube known as the vas deferens (vas) and with the secretions from the other glands in the body,
form the ejaculate or seminal fluid. These tubes lie close to the skin on either side of the scrotum, and are therefore easily accessible.
The operation itself involves the removal of a small section of these tubes. The operation usually takes between ten and twenty minutes. Non-scapel
vasectomy may be available when suitable for the patient.
Vasectomy Charges
The Elliot-Smith Clinic is a not for profit organization. The fees cover any additional counselling that may be necessary, the operation and all post-operative semen tests. The current charges can be seen on the Fee's page.
